Applying for Social Security Disability (SSDI, SSI) |

When a person applies for social security disability, including SSI disability and SSDI disability benefits, the claim goes through three stages: application submission, Social Security Administration (SSA) interview and doctor examination.
SSDI and SSI Disability Application Submission
The first step, naturally, is filing the SSDI application or SSI Disability application with the Social Security Administration (SSA). This application can be submitted by mail. However, it is easier and more efficient to apply by phone (1-800-772-1213) or online at SSA.gov.
Social Security Conducts an Interview
Once the application is filed, Social Security will conduct an in-depth interview. The Social Security Administration will seek to perform this interview in-person; however, it can be done by phone if it is difficult for you to travel.
Disability Benefit Application Doctor Examination
Once the application process is completed, Social Security will typically pay to have a doctor examine the disability applicant to assess physical or psychological disability. This examination is usually brief and not very thorough. Your disability benefit application is ruled on after the medical examination.
