Earnings requirements: Below are definitions of the Social Security Administration's 2009 requirements for the “recent work” test and the “duration of work” test.
- Recent work test: This is based on the age at which you were first disabled. Workers are split into 3 age brackets: younger than 24, 24 to 31, over 31 years old.
- Duration of work test: This test shows that you have worked long enough to receive social security benefits. In general, you must have worked between 1.5 years and 6 years. If you have are of age 50 or better, you may have had to work 7-10 years to receive social security disability benefits.
Who decides if I am qualified for 2009 Social Security Disability benefits?
The Social Security Disability Administration will review your 2009 disability application for social security benefits. In the process, the Social Security Administration will consider your:
- Employment history: The SSA will check whether you have worked enough years to qualify
- Current work activities
- Medical evidence and disability documentation from your doctors and hospitals
- Earnings: If you are working and earning more than a certain amount each month, the SSA will not consider you disabled. The current amount is approximately $13,560 if you are under retirement age (66-67 years old). If you are at full retirement age or older, there is no limit on your earnings.
- Medical condition: To be considered disabled and receive benefits, your medical condition must limit your ability to do basic work activities (walking, sitting, and remembering) for at least one year.
- Ability to do another type of work: If you cannot do the work you did in the past before your disability, the SSA looks to see if you would be able to do other work. If you can do other work, the state agency will decide that you are not disabled.

- Genitourinary System (impairment of renal function, Nephrotic syndrome)
- Hematological Disorders (chronic anemia, sickle cell disease, chronic thrombocytopenia, coagulation defects, Myelofibrosis, chronic granulocytopenia, aplastic anemias)
- Skin Disorders (Bullous disease, chronic infections of the skin, Dermatitis, genetic photosensitivity disorders, burns)
- Endocrine System (thyroid disorders, hyper and hypo-parathyroidism, diabetes insipidus or mellitus)
